A teaser visual has been released for the TV anime “Darwin Incident,” announcing that it is currently in production. In addition, information on the main staff has been revealed, and it has been revealed that the director will be Tsuda Naokatsu, who served as the superintendent general of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind” and other works. Director Tsuda has also provided a comment.
“Darwin Incident” is a human and non-human drama by Umezawa Shun, currently being serialized in Kodansha’s monthly comic magazine “Afternoon”. It depicts Charlie, a “human gee” born between a human and a chimpanzee, facing human problems such as “terrorism”, “flaming”, and “discrimination” as a “non-human”.
The total number of copies of the series has exceeded 1.6 million, and it has won the Grand Prize of the “Manga Taisho 2022”, the Excellence Award in the Manga Division of the “25th Japan Media Arts Festival” by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and second place in the “Recommended Comics 2022 Selected by Publishers Comics Departments”. It has swept all manga awards, including the Asia section of the “BDGest’Arts” held at the “50th Angoulême International Comics Festival” in France, and is highly popular not only in Japan but also overseas.
Along with the release of the 8th volume of the comics, a teaser visual was released announcing that a TV anime is currently in production, and information on the main staff was also revealed. The teaser visual features the phrase “Encounters between humans and non-humans change the world,” expressing the sense of unease lurking in the daily lives of Charlie and Lucy.
It has also been revealed that the main staff will include director Tsuda Naokatsu, who served as general director of the TV anime “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind” and others. Nakayama Katsuichi, assistant director of “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance” will serve as series director, and Inotsume Shinichi, from “PERSONA 5 the Animation,” will be in charge of series composition. Tomooka Shinpei, from “Build Divide,” will handle character design, and the production will be handled by Bellnox Films. Director Tsuda also provided a comment.
