It has been announced that the timeless classic “Anne of Green Gables” will be animated as “Anne Shirley Animation Series” and will be broadcast on NHK Educational TV from April 2025. It will be produced by Answer Studio, which has worked on “Sparrow’s Door Lock” and “Your Name.” Along with the announcement, the program logo and some visuals were also released.
The original Anne of Green Gables series, written by Montgomery and translated by Hanako Muraoka, tells the story of Anne, an orphan who is adopted by Marilla and Matthew in Avonlea, a beautiful small island on Prince Edward Island in Canada. Anne’s overwhelming imagination and beautiful heart make up for the difficult circumstances she faced up until the age of 11, and she changes the hearts of those around her. The beauty of the natural surroundings and the depiction of the people’s feelings convey the warmth of the small happinesses and love of everyday life.
It is known as a timeless masterpiece that has been loved for over 70 years since the translated version was published in Japan in 1952. This story, which still has not lost its luster, is now being revived as a new coming-of-age story in the animated series “Anne Shirley.”
The animation will be produced by Answer Studio, known for its high production quality and having worked on such films as “Sparrow’s Door Lock” and “Your Name.” Set on Prince Edward Island, a real island said to be the most beautiful in the world, the film will use its high level of animation production to charmingly depict Anne, Diana and others living in harmony with the beautiful nature and moving about vibrantly.
The film will be a coming-of-age story that depicts Anne Shirley’s growth from a girl to a woman, based on three main pillars: the bonds between Anne, Marilla, and Matthew’s new family; the friendship between Anne and Diana; and the romance between Anne and Gilbert.
Even now, more than 100 years after the publication of the original “Anne of Green Gables,” the “Anne of Green Gables” still conveys the same important things people should value in life. Expectations are high for the animated “Anne Shirley,” which can be enjoyed by a wide range of people from children to adults, and will help people notice the small joys of everyday life and live brighter lives.
