It has been announced that a major exhibition of manga artist Shirow Masamune, including the debut of works such as “Ghost in the Shell,” “Appleseed,” and “Dominion,” entitled “The World of Shirow Masamune: Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation,” will be held at the Setagaya Literary Museum in Tokyo from April 12, 2025. Manga artist and illustrator Masamune Shirow began working in the fields of manga and illustration in 1982. Since then, his main works include “Appleseed,” “Dominion,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and “Pandora in the Crimson Shell,” and as an animator he has worked on “Black Magic M66.” He is also active in a variety of creative fields, including games and art books.
Shirow used his unique sensibility to capture information about cutting-edge technology that had not yet penetrated the world at the time his works were published in the 1980s and 1990s, and was one of the earliest artists in the world to depict a computerized future in his manga. His innovativeness continues to have a major influence on creators of manga, science fiction literature, movies, and other fields.
The exhibition “The World of Masamune Shirow – Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation” will be held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of Setagaya Literary Museum. The exhibition will focus on one of Shirow’s most famous works, Ghost in the Shell, and will trace his career from his early work Black Magic to Appleseed, Dominion, and Orion in the Shell, all the way up to the present. You will be able to see the entire world of Shirow’s creations up close. The
key visual released with the announcement of the exhibition name and period also features a design that brings together all of Shirow’s most famous works, including Ghost in the Shell. The exhibition will also feature a large number of original goods, brand collaboration goods, and collaborations with artists.
November 18th is the commemorative day for the release of the movie “Ghost in the Shell,” which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Setagaya Literary Museum, the “Masamune Shirow World Exhibition” is likely to become a major movement in 2025.
